LMS san serif BLOCK Smokebox Numbering
LMS London Midland & Scottish - 1948 BLOCK style Smokebox numbering, San Serif approx 2.6mm high. The transfers are printed in white to enable rapid application direct to your model and include a selection of made-up numbersets with spare digits for you to make up numbers of your choice. With thanks to Mr Colin Ryder for his research.
This type of smokebox plate was commonly applied before the plates in Gill Sans came on stream in June 1948. Those fitted to express locos were generally replaced within about two years, but locomotives less in the travelling public's view retained them often until withdrawal. LMS Serif and LMS Sans Serif were far less common, and where used on Black 5's, were also replaced with Gill Sans on major overhaul.
